Easiest is to use youmescript.com
Alternately, you can use Google Docs. Google Docs demo script HERE (make a copy). Use the video below for help with formatting.
Script Mechanics:
A screenplay should have a title page including the screenplay title, author, and FADE IN: Subsequent pages should include the scene headings, dialogue and action. The document pages should have:
A scene header (or slugline) which includes: INT (for interior) or EXT (for exterior), the location, and the time description (DAY, NIGHT, etc). Should be ALL CAPS.
A sentence or paragraph describing the Action (minimal description). Use present tense (i.e. shops instead of is shopping)
Dialogue should follow the Action and should include:
Character name (if VO, add that in brackets) Should be ALL CAPS
parenthetical* (who is being spoken to - use sparingly)
dialogue
FADE OUT (at end)
Please note that line spacing and margins matter! See the demo handed out during class. Use two lines between scenes rather than CUT TO.
* parenthetical means set off within parenthesis
Script Software:
The easiest software to use is Google Docs. You will need to format your script using industry standards. Please see this example (you can make a copy). See the video beside this paragraph for how to format your document in less than 5 minutes.
Other Software: There are free versions of both Trelby (Windows only) and Celtx available here:
Highland 2 can be used on a Mac)
