True Colours is a Children's Book that contains eleven true stories of children and adults who have experienced colourism.
True Colours makes for a heart-touching read as one swims through not only the pain, hurt, and shock experienced by people; but also the journey of healing, resilience and learning to stand up for oneself. Our stories demonstrate that no two people are affected by discrimination in the same way. This book will make you realise the power of words, actions and beliefs, in leaving lasting impressions on people's lives. Come, take this journey with us- into stories of loss, guilt, overcoming insecurities, and loving one's skin.
Students who developed this book thought it was important to share people's real experiences of discrimination as a way of creating change in society. Students conducted personal interviews with our interviewees, and also wrote stories based on those interviews. Further, they also worked on the artwork for every story in the book.

Gayathri, Saachi, Jarna, Prathamesh, Krishiv, Vibha, Kavya, and Madhav along with Asmi, Atharva, Garv, Sharvari, Oas and Yuvatistaa (not pictured here) are an enthusiastic group of grade 4 and 5 students who decided to commit an hour every week (over and above all their other school work) to study this issue and create the book- True Colours. They spent hours interviewing people about their experience with dark skin stigma and then translating those interviews into beautiful stories accompanied by powerful illustrations.

To pull of a project of this nature took a lot of hardwork and push from some fabulous teachers and well-wishers that we would like to thank. The True Colours team would like to thank Ms. Smriti Parikh and Ms. Lakshata Gianani for their help with editing our stories. Additionally a big thank you to Ms. Alafiya Hasan and Ms. Mita Samanta for all the support with creating digital versions of our art work. We would not have managed to do this without their guidance and support!
