Week of March 25 - March 28
Adding to our Grocery Store Model
After our trip to Acme, we had some new ideas of how to decorate our grocery store model. During the trip, we walked up and down all of the aisles and looked at the different kinds of food on the shelves. This week, we created aisles for our grocery model by using rectangle pieces of cardboard and gluing on pictures of the different sections - such as the refrigerators, cereal, and produce. We also created some different kinds of food boxes to add to our shelves!
Insect Collages
During our Studio class on Monday, Billie led the children through the creation of insect collages. Billie first showed us an informative book about bugs, where we learned several facts. All insects have 3 body segments - the head, thorax, and abdomen. They also all have antennae and 6 legs. Billie then passed out colorful paper in the shapes of the insects' body parts and the children used them to create their own bugs.
One on One Saturday
Thank you to everyone who braved the rain and was able to attend our Saturday One on One day! We got to experience an indoor work time with all of our classroom areas open, as well as working with Billie in the Big Room.
Sensory Play
We revisited finger paints this week, a material that we have not used in several months. The children enjoyed getting messy while they mixed the different colored paints. Finger painting inspires creativity as well as fulfills sensory needs and helps children to develop their fine motor skills.
We also created a sensory experience in the water table on Wednesday by filling the table with shaving cream instead of water! The children explored the texture of the shaving cream by squeezing it between their fingers, and used whisks to mix drops of food coloring into it.
Little Peter Rabbit
"Little Peter Rabbit had a fly upon his nose,
Little Peter Rabbit had a fly upon his nose,
Little Peter Rabbit had a fly upon his nose,
And he flipped and he flapped it and it flew away!"
Fire Safety
After our fire drill last week, many of the children had questions about the fire bell and wanted to know more about what happens during a fire drill or a real fire. We reassured all of the children that we would keep them safe, and that parents keep them safe at home, but we also wanted to answer their questions. We talked about the fire bells in our school and how even at home there are smoke detectors, and we listened to the different sounds that the alarms make. Each group got to read the book "Firefighter Piggy Wiggy" and we talked about how firefighters use their hoses to put out fires. Rachel's group even went on a tour around the school to look at all of our fire extinguishers!

Our Adventure to ACME
It was an exciting day at school, our trip day has finally come! The teachers made sure the children's list of questions were printed out so we could ask the ACME employees after our tour. The children's questions have stemmed from their self made grocery store during work time and our grocery model.
We read these books to the children before and after our trip to spark any other questions and ideas for our work and play.
Riding on the Yellow School Bus
The bus ride was a few of the children's favorite part of the trip.
Researchers and Explorers inside ACME
Inside, we were separated into two small groups and got a VIP tour around ACME with a store manager. We got to meet employees along the way and discovered many answers to our questions.
We learned that the food is delivered to ACME in box trucks. The delivery of food is packed in boxes and rolled into the store on carts. The food is unboxed and put away in it's place.
Yes, the grocery store has a bakery and most of the bread, cakes, and cookies are baked behind the counter. We all got a cookie to take home, yum!
The dairy section is kept inside the fridge. We opened the door for a quick moment to feel how chilly it is inside, BRR!
Miss Brooke opened up these big doors and let us have a sneak peek of where the box trucks come in to deliver the food.
We learned about the self checkout and what the scanner looks and sounds like. Our children were scanning their food during play and now we have a better idea of what it looks like if we were to build our own!
The grocery store has different sections. The fruit and vegetables are always found together. This section is called "Produce."
The children were curious why there were numbers. The numbers and words on the ceiling tell us where to find what we are looking for. There are 14 aisles in total, wow!
Miss Anna and Miss Brooke did not know how many ice cream flavors they had. There are hundreds of ice cream flavors here!
These dog bones were super heavy!
A receipt came out to show us what we bought after Miss Anna scanned a Snickers bar as an example.
Viewing a frozen crab up close. This is the seafood section!
Walking through all the aisles, we discovered there is more than food and drinks sold at the store. Bandaids, stuffies, dog toys, and more!
We loved the stuffies and toy aisle!
We had such a wonderful experience and almost the entire store to ourselves. We were able to get answers to most of our questions and spent the rest of the week reflecting and adding new ideas to our grocery store play and model. Thank you for having us ACME!
Happy Spring!
The children painted unique flowers using an array of colors. We noticed flowers blooming around our school and were inspired to put our own on the walls.
Adding to our Grocery Store Model
Our grocery store model is flowing with ideas after our trip. The children installed a tile floor after a meeting!
More Snaps of Our Week
After a practice fire drill, Rachel's group read a story about firefighters and answered all of the children's questions as well as addressing their concerns. We spoke about how the fire fighters want us to practice at school to get outside to safety.
Reviewing pictures we took during our grocery store trip
Observational drawings of the forsythia flowers.

This Week's Grocery Work
We are so excited that our trip to Acme is finally planned! In the classroom we are continuing to develop our grocery store dramatic play and work on our store model. We are looking forward to seeing if the children's play and knowledge changes after our trip next week.
Please remember to fill out the permission form if you haven't already!
Struggling to carry all of your items after purchasing them? "We need bags!"
Seeing how many items fit into one bag
Adding bar-code stickers to our food boxes
Coming up with questions we have about grocery stores prior to our trip.
Questions from Danielle and Rachel's groups:
How does the food get made? Is it made in the store or does the store buy it?
Do box trucks or milk trucks come to the store?
Does the fruit come from Delicious Orchards?
How did the store get made?
Where does the food come from?
What ice cream flavors do they have?
Grocery Store Model
This week, we finished painting the grocery store model in the color that the children voted on - red!
Spring Inspiration
The season of spring is approaching quickly so we decided to hang some beautiful flower photos up next to the easels as inspiration for the children to paint. Hopefully the flowers in our Welcome Garden at school will start blooming soon!
March Birthday Assembly
We had 4 birthdays to celebrate this month!
Happy birthday to Devin, Jacqueline, Mackie, and Jeanine!

Book Borrowing
Attention all book borrowers! We have noticed that our book borrowing chart is getting very full with cards from books that the children have borrowed. We love that the children love to take books home, but we believe that some children have borrowed more than one book at a time. Please check your houses for any book(s) with the "A Child's Place" stamp and card holder in the back so that we can continue to allow the children to take books home.
Thank you!
Week of March 4 - March 8
Visiting Day
All of the children had the opportunity to visit different classrooms for work time on Tuesday morning. Some of the children were excited to meet up with their siblings as well as play with other members of ACP. There were a mix of games and areas of play the children could explore.
Puffy Paint!
On Wednesday, Austin's mommy, Ashley, visited the class to do a fun craft with Danielle's group - creating puffy paint! We mixed together equal parts of shaving cream and glue and then added in some paint. This created a paint mixture that should stay fluffy even after it dries. During this activity we had many children pass us and say that they wanted to create puffy paint too, so we may need to become the teachers soon and show everyone how to do it!
Game Day
On Wednesday morning we invited all of the children to participate in Game Day! We had so much fun learning how to play different games enriched with math and literacy.
Bingo
Family Fishing Game
Schmear
Monopoly
Pete The Cat Missing Cupcakes
Inviting New Customers into the Market
Hello Arlene and Susan's group! On Monday all of the Half Day is together for work time. Our groups invited some new customers into the grocery store...looks like we need to stock up our shelves!
Creating Bar Codes
After documenting the children's play and conversations regarding the grocery store, the teachers noticed that many of them were scanning food. The children were shown a large bar code and were explained that this picture helps the food scan! They created their own bar codes to stick onto our grocery items.
"It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring!"
