The use of plastics and plastic production has rapidly increased over the past 40 years. In 2018, about 359 million metric tons of plastic were produced globally. Only about 10% of the plastics produced are properly recycled. The other 90% of plastics end up in oceans, ruining our environment. In 1977, only 50 million metric tons of plastics were produced globally. In the last 43 years, global plastic production has grown by 618%.
What scents do people enjoy smelling the most? We wanted to find out, so we created a survey asking people what their favorite scent is. We then put the responses in categories such as fruit, sweet, citrus, floral, fresh, and others. After sorting the responses we created a graph that will help us understand which fragrance type is most popular. The data shows that the most popular scent type is fruit scents. It had a total of 8 votes, which was 25.8% of all the votes. Both sweet and floral scents came in second, with 22.6% of the votes or 7 votes each. In third place, is fresh scents, with about 16.1% of all votes or 5 votes total. This data is important because in the future when we make our 1st prototype, we plan to use the most popular scent type to appeal to more customers.
Before the experiment began, we did some background research about the average amount of body wash that should be used every time you shower. The recommended amounts we found were enough to fill your palm, enough to fill a shot glass, or about 1/4 to 2 pumps, and a quarter size to a half-dollar coin-sized dollop. After doing some research, we found out that one shot glass is equal to 1 - 1.5 fl. oz or 30 - 44 ml. After testing a few soap dispensers, we found out that 1 pump of body wash fills about 1/2 a teaspoon. Additionally, we calculated that the surface area of a quarter is equal to 0.71630276 in. or 462.2442041 mm. While the surface area of a half-dollar coin is 1.140417768 in or 735.8961665 mm. After conducting the 5-day long experiment, we took the results and sorted them into a table hoping that the data could help us answer the question, what is the average amount of body wash that people use daily? Using the table, we created a graph. The graph showed that most people used 2 pumps of body wash on average. The data was also used to find the mean, median, and mode which all rounded up to or were equal to 2.
In addition to the experiment, we also created a survey where one of the questions asked was, what is the average amount of body wash you use in terms of pumps? From our survey, we discovered that, on average, the majority of adult respondents use less than a pump of body wash. On average, the majority of student respondents used 2 pumps of body wash daily. The results of both adults and kids combined showed that 30.9% of our respondents use 2 pumps of body wash daily. 17.7% of respondents used less than 1 pump, 16% used 1 pump, 14.3% used 3 pumps, 12% used 4 pumps, and 9.1% of respondents 5+ pumps of body wash on average daily.
In our survey that we sent out to our school community, one of the questions asked was, are you willing to replace your normal body wash with Kel Jel? As you can see, 84.6% of our respondents were willing to replace their normal body wash with our pods.
We surveyed our school community asking what price people would buy our product. The price options were $8-$12, $13-$18, $19-$24, and $30+. 41 respondents chose the price range of $8-$12 which was 52% of the respondents. 36 respondents chose the price range of $13-$18, or 35.4%. 15 respondents picked the price range $19-$24 which was 10.9%, and finally, 2 respondents chose $30+, or 1.1%. We based our final cost of 30 jelly pods on the data we collected from this survey. Considering how more than half of the respondents chose the price range of $8-$12, we would say that the final price is very reasonable, and people are willing to buy our product.
The prices for Kel Jel ranged from $12- $15. According to our survey, 52% of respondents would pay around $8 - $12 for Kel Jel, we didn't want to market our product any lower than $12. If we marketed our product at a price of less than $12, we would be making around 50% or less in profit. Also, the average price for our competitor products is $15. We originally planned to market our product for $15, because a good amount of our respondents said that they are willing to pay around $13 - $18 for Kel Jel. Not only that but if we marketed our product at $15, we would make a 63.6% profit. We were very happy about our profit margin, but we ended up lowering the price to $12, considering that during this time of crisis most people can't afford to buy just a monthly supply of body wash for $15. Even our survey results showed that the majority of people would only pay $8-$12 for our product. Though, we would only make a 54.5% profit, we wanted our product to affordable for everyone.
Our competitors are other zero waste and eco-friendly companies that create personal care products. We have many competitors already out in the market, our product is just as efficient and cheaper as well. For instance, one of our competitors, Earth Suds sells 30 crushable body wash tablets for $18. These tablets are single-use, so it costs $0.60 per wash. Another one of our competitors is Feather & Bone. They sell water-activated tablets of facial cleansers that turn to a paste for the face. Feather & Bone markets their products at $9 to $20. If you are buying a pack of 30 tablets from them, it costs $0.67 each. Lastly, NOHBO, their products range from $9.95 - $34.95, costing you $0.66 per wash unless you are buying in bulk which will cost you $0.55 per wash. The calculated mean for the cost per wash of all 3 competitors is $0.62 per wash. Kel Jel is $0.25 cheaper costing only $0.37 per wash. Also, our competitors' products range from $9-$35, averaging to about $15 per product. On the other hand, Kel Jel is cheaper costing only $12 making it more affordable. Additionally, Kel Jel is a product like none out there. Though we have many competitor companies who share a similar vision, no one has ever thought of making a pod with a shower jelly exterior and organic body wash inside. That is what makes us special compared to other products out there,
