Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a set of principles for curriculum development that aims to improve teaching and learning for all people. UDL is based on three core principles:Â
Engagement- Offer multiple ways to engage students in the learning process, such as interactive activities, group discussions, or online discussion boards
Representation- Provide learners various ways to access and engage with course materials and information, such as textbooks in audio or multimedia formats, images, videos, interactive media, or simulations
Action/expression- Allow students to perceive, comprehend, and express their learning in a way that most benefits them
UDL's goal is to use a variety of teaching methods to remove any barriers to learning and give all students equal opportunities to succeed. UDL benefits all kids by building in flexibility that can be adjusted for every student's strengths and needs, and fostering lessons that offer students 'voice and choice'.
