2024 Stage 5 Electives

Subject Selection Expo

Welcome! You have arrived at our online Expo for our Year 9 and 10 (Stage 5) Electives.  Below you will find the subject lines, explanations for each course and instructions about the selection process. If you have any further questions, please reach out and speak with a teacher.

Dear Parents / Carers and Students,

Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) is an important period in a young person’s school experience. During this period the demands of the core curriculum in English, Mathematics and Science, the Humanities, and Personal & Physical Development increase substantially, preparing students to learn more thoroughly and think more deeply, and for the first time students can choose some of the subjects they study.

This combination provides an appropriate balance between depth and breadth of study, allowing students to establish strong foundations in the subjects of the common core and  also explore their individual interests through their electives.

Stage 5 is a period of school life that requires excellence and effort. It is not a time for students to slow down, cruise through, or disregard. Rather, it forms for all students a vital connection to their future learning, regardless in what field of endeavour that future learning may be.

This guide is an important resource for you to refer to as you make decisions about which elective courses you choose to do over the next 2 years. Remember also that the  teaching staff are all available to provide you with information about courses and with advice about your options and we encourage you to make good use of their experience, expertise, and interest in your best future.

My earnest prayer for all our students completing Stage 5 at Australian Christian College Marsden Park is that through their course of study they have a clear sense of their gifts and talents, interest and abilities, and in this period of school helps them determine exactly what future God is shaping them to be successful in.

Brendan Corr

Principal

Elective subjects at ACC are developed by the college to ensure they are futures-focussed, interesting for students and based in a strong ‘practical’ framework. As such, there is a large variety of options from which students can choose - aligning with our vision as we “help each student to succeed in whatever God wants them to do.”

Students in Year 9 and 10 can select one subject from Line A and one subject from Line B. Each course lasts for 12 months. Students will undertake four different courses over their two years in Stage 5.

There are limits on class sizes and students will be assigned their selection based on their choice and the order with which they are submitted.  If a student misses out of their chosen subject, they need to select another subject from the same line. If a student misses out on their choice in Year 9 they will have another opportunity in Year 10 to select that elective.

Students have until the end of Week 5 Term 1 to make any changes to their elective subjects. After this time, an appointment with the Head of Secondary School will need to be made to request a change. Changes will be made with consideration of class sizes, dynamics and wellbeing needs. Students should not assume they can change classes after Week 5 - and then only if class sizes allow.
