2024 Distance Education
Stage 5 Electives Subject Selection Expo
Welcome to the Distance Education Subject Selection Expo for Year 9 and 10 (Stage 5). Below you will find the subjects available, explanations for each course and instructions about the selection process. If you have any further questions, please reach out and contact us through Intercom (instant chat button in lower right of Canvas).
Elective subjects at ACC are developed by the college to ensure they are future-focussed, interesting for students & accessible via Distance Education. As such, courses are developed to align with our vision as we “help each student to succeed in whatever God wants them to do.”
Here are a few of Mr Reifler's favourite Bible verses for encouragement:
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. - James 1:5
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. - Proverbs 16:7-8
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. - Proverbs 16:9
Dear Parents / Carers and Students,
Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) is an important period in a young person’s school experience. During this period the demands of the core curriculum in English, Mathematics and Science, the Humanities, and Personal & Physical Development increase substantially, preparing students to learn more thoroughly and think more deeply, and for the first time students can choose some of the subjects they study.
This combination provides an appropriate balance between depth and breadth of study, allowing students to establish strong foundations in the subjects of the common core and also explore their individual interests through their electives.
Stage 5 is a period of school life that requires excellence and effort. It is not a time for students to slow down, cruise through, or disregard. Rather, it forms for all students a vital connection to their future learning, regardless in what field of endeavour that future learning may be .
This guide is a resource for you to understand the unique features of Year 9 and 10, and support your child in the selection of their elective courses for the next 2 years (1 year at a time). Remember also that the teaching staff are all available to provide you with information about courses and with advice about your options and we encourage you to make good use of their experience, expertise, and interest in your best future.
My earnest prayer for all our students completing Stage 5 at Australian Christian College Marsden Park is that through their course of study they have a clear sense of their gifts and talents, interest and abilities, and in this period of school helps them determine exactly what future God is shaping for them to be successful.

DE Stage 5 Elective subject choices are due by Wednesday 27 September.
NEW: For students enrolling at the College after these dates, subject selection will be done during the enrolment process through this:
It is compulsory for Stage 5 Distance Education students to commit to studying at least one elective subject per year, with a second elective subject recommended (One is expected and one is optional). Electives can be released if time is needed for other priorities like training or therapy, through discussion with the College.
See some guiding principles below for subject selection:
For students submitting their choices through in November, their first elective will be confirmed immediately and their second elective (if any) will be confirmed after staff review and moderation.
Students will need to select (only for 2024):
one or two courses in Year 9.
a different one or two courses in Year 10.
Students will have the opportunity to select elective subjects in Term 3, for the year ahead. Each Elective course offered is for 12 months. A student does not need to commit to one course for two years.
Late enrolments in Semester 2 (July-October) will need to be considered on a case-by-case basis regarding the best use of the limited time they have in the course, as well as prior experience in that subject.
Asterisk* indicates it is difficult for late enrolments to enter this subject part way through the year due to project work.
The College aims to continue developing additional Elective subjects for offer in 2025.
Be aware that:
There may be additional resource costs associated with some courses that are not included in College fees.
Elective courses are more self-guided than core subjects. They are less teacher-directed and have less assessments, so require greater self-motivation and initiative.
There are no caps/limits to the number of students accepted into each Elective.
