Molecular Biology for Beginners
This is the old website for MolBio workshops. For the latest MolBio workshops conducted at IISER-Pune, please check our new website.
Welcome to the website for the "Molecular Biology for Beginners" (MBB) series of workshops under the "Molecular Biology for Everyone" initiative of IISER Pune. The MBB workshops are 1-day long hands-on events which aim to introduce basic mol bio practicals to school students (Class IX-XII) and people with no prior exposure to the subject.
The Backdrop
Molecular Biology is one of the most exciting branches of science in the 21st century. On one hand, it has significantly advanced our knowledge of how life works at the level of molecules. On the other hand, molecular biology techniques serve as the foundations of biotechnology which in turn has applications ranging from modern medicine (e.g., gene therapy and molecular medicine) to ecology and conservation biology. Therefore, most countries, including India, have been investing a good portion of their research budget into funding molecular biology-related projects. At the same time, there has been a lot of emphasis on molecular biology education at the Bachelors and Masters level.
However, in India, molecular biology techniques are introduced only at the college level, by which time many students have already left biology or even science. Thus, these students get no exposure to these techniques in their entire education. Moreover, in the absence of exposure to how modern research is actually performed, such students may completely miss out on the beauty of scientific methodology.
The course
MBB tries to ameliorate the above situation through 1-day long hands-on workshops that expose school students to a number of basic molecular biology techniques. In the process, it encourages students to think like molecular biologists, and explore some of the exciting possibilities offered by the subject. At the same time, the MBB workshops can serve as a primer to those persons, who never got exposed to molecular biology, yet would like to have a first-hand glimpse of what the subject is all about.
The dates can be found here.
Salient features of the course
Only 10 students per workshop.
Two full-time, highly qualified instructors.
Experiments include DNA extraction, Gel Electrophoresis and PCR.
All experiments to be done by every student.
Exposure to the basics of the theory behind the experiments.
Exposure to basic bioinformatics (BLAST).
Materials given include all experimental protocols.
Who can apply?
This course is for two kinds of audience.
Category 1: Students in Class IX-XII, who are currently enrolled in a school or a degree college.
Category 2: People who have finished Class XII, and are interested in getting a glimpse of some basic experiments in molecular biology.
The workshop assumes no prior knowledge of molecular biology. Selected participants shall be given introductory reading materials before they come for the workshop. All participants, after successful completion of the workshop, shall get a certificate of completion.
