Using the senses

USING SENSES TO DESCRIBE REACTIONS TO A TOPIC

This can be done individually but if so each individual produces the whole poem. in many cases this will be several steps too far but, where a participant is confident, can produce a very full response to an issue. However it’s much more likely that this would be more useful with a group working together to frame their response. Again this is more appropriate for later in depth exploration of an issue once confidence has been gained.

The topic can be anything, but for an example let’s use Time.

  1. Choose a day, month, season etc. Of course any subject really.

  1. What does it feel like?

  1. Give it a colour that feels appropriate

  1. Compare the colour to something of that colour

  1. What does it sound like?

  1. What does it smell like?

  1. What does it taste like?

  1. Sum up what you feel about the subject in a short statement

Finger pointing at a babies ear

Today is my 1st day

It feels new and exciting

It is bright yellow like the dawn

It sounds like a fanfare

It smells fresh like a freshly mowed lawn

It tastes of toothpaste and fresh air

Today is a fresh new day
