At St Machar Academy we use a digital system called Pupil Tracking to communicate pupil attainment to parents, carers and pupils.
Within the report you will find an overview of your young person's performance in each subject, along with the working grade. The working grade reflects your young person’s current attainment and can change throughout the course of the year. This grade is based on a variety of different pieces of evidence and can be impacted negatively by poor habits such as persistent lateness or lack of engagement.
Level Information
The national expectation in terms of pupil progression through the Curriculum for Excellence Levels are shown below:
Early - This includes pre-school and primary 1
First - To the end of P4, but earlier or later for some
Second - To the end of P7, but earlier or later for some
Third - Achieved by some learners at the end of S2 and most by S3
Fourth - This level is integral to progression towards National 5. Therefore, learning experiences in S3 should reflect this for the majority.

Breadth: when a young person first moves up a level they are introduced to a broad range of new experiences and outcomes.

Description of the grades that are given to young people in S4-6 depending on what type of qualification they are doing:
For National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher tracking, a scale of 1-9 is used. In the final results these are converted to a grade represented by the letters A-D. Only schools receive the information as to which numerical grade the young person received (upper or lower band). We are always happy to share this information:
1 (A) 85%+
2 (A) 70% - 84%
3 (B) 65% - 69%
4 (B) 60% - 64%
5 (C) 55% - 59%
6 (C) 50% - 54%
7 (D) Notionally 40% - 49%
No award 8 and 9 less than 40%
For National 2-4, ungraded National 5 and NPAs the following is used:
P: On track
F: At risk
Your child will also be given a copy of their tracking report to complete an exercise in their PSE class where they RAG rate their subjects. Young people are asked to identify subjects as either Red (significant concerns; requires immediate action), Amber (some concerns or opportunity for improvement; requires additional action) or Green (performing well; on track). All young people should have had learning conversations with their subject teacher who will support them to understand their tracking and plan next steps. PSE teachers will support the completion of this exercise with electronic copies made available to parents. This will support conversations at home.
Should you wish to discuss the contents of your child's attainment report further, please contact their Guidance Teacher.
