GIRFEC

What is GIRFEC?

Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) is a national approach to help improve and support the wellbeing of our children and young people by offering the right help at the right time by the right people.

The Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014  is about improving the wellbeing of children and young people in Scotland.  The Act is wide ranging and includes key parts of the GIRFEC approach.  It aims to support children, young people and parents/carers and families to work in partnership to address wellbeing needs.

More information about Aberdeen City and St Machar Academy's approaches to Getting it Right can be found at the Integrated Children Services website.

It's all about wellbeing

All services are working together in Aberdeen to make sure that every child enjoys being young and at the same time is: Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included.  These eight indicators - often shortened to SHANARRI - are seen as representing the basic requirements for all children and young people to griw, develop and reach their full potential.

SHANARRI

SHANARRI forms a key part of the National Health and Wellbeing Strategy.  The aim is to ensure our young people have the right support to achieve high levels, and a secure understanding of:

Many areas are the responsibility of all adults, however, others are dealt with in more details by specific areas of the curriculum such as PSE, Physical Education and Home Economics.
