Numeracy
Targeted Numeracy support is delivered by year group pupil support teachers in small groups of participants weekly for a 50 minute session over 7-8 weeks. The programme is designed to build numerical skills and knowledge as well as developing strategies for tackling numerical problems in context.
Aims
The aims of this programme are:
to improve basic and topic-specific skills in numeracy, in order for students to work above functional levels
to develop confidence and self-esteem
to increase students' ability to access the curriculum and work more independently
to improve levels of progress and achievement for students who arrive at the academy with weak levels of numeracy
Criteria
Pupils participating in these sessions will be identified via:
S2 and S3 year groups
analysis of end-of-year and ongoing assessment outcomes focusing on atypical and lower than average results
Discussion between PT GIRFEC and PT Numeracy
class observations by Targeted Support teacher(s)
review of contextual information
Measured Impact
Improvements in performance and progress evidenced via formal assessments active responses to questioning and opportunities for unaided, independent learning.
Demonstrable enhancements in confidence and self-esteem evidenced by a willingness to engage and participate in numerical learning, apply numerical methods to new learning and contextualised exercises and work co-operatively with self-assurance.
