What do we do to at Kingswells to prepare children and families for starting Secondary?
Mrs MacIver co-ordinates the transition for our pupils to Bucksburn Academy. We have developed a strong and effective partnership which supports our pupils to move seamlessly on to the next year of their schooling.
If your child would benefit from attending a specialist provision, we will get in touch with families to engage in this process in Primary 6.
The transition for all other children starts with conversations between Kingswells Staff and Bucksburn Academy staff at the start of Primary 7. Children who would benefit from additional transition arrangements will be invited to a meeting at the end of Term 1.
We appreciate that starting secondary school is a big event for our pupils and we work hard to get this process right. If you need any further help, please get in touch with Mrs MacIver.
Term 3
In January, parents/carers are invited to attend a meeting in Kingswells School to meet key adults from Bucksburn Academy. Parents/carers hear an outline of the transition process and ask questions.
In February, Pupils attend a teamworking event at Bucksburn Academy along with pupils from other feeder Primary Schools. This is followed up with a tour of the school for parents in the evening.
Term 4
Prior to the transition days in June, all Principal Teachers of Pupil Support will visit our pupils and let them know the classes they will be in for S1. They will introduce themselves to the pupils and answer any questions about the upcoming transition visit.
In June all our pupils who will attend Bucksburn Academy in August will attend the school for 2 days. They will following their timetable for S1 and be in classes with their new classmates. Kingswells School staff assist to get the children over and back by bus but do not stay with the pupils. Following these 2 days there will be another chance for parents to attend an evening transition event and learn more about how their children got on over their 2 days.
