Every year our Primary 5 learners apply to be in the Junior Road Safety Officers Group. The Group consists of around 15-20 learners who organise and promote road safety initiatives throughout the year. They have a notice board, hold assemblies and come up with different ideas to promote safer, healthier and more eco-friendly travel to school. The JRSO have created this website to share all the initiatives they organise to do this.
The Tour of Britain is a great opportunity for people to cycle and have great fun. The tour travels throughout Great Britain and travels through Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Airyhall promotes the Tour of Britain with our learners. We have had the mascot visit us to tell us all about it.
Our JRSO take part in Travel Surveys where they monitor the traffic going past the school.
The school travel plan helps plan to achieve our goal of safer, healthier and more eco-friendly travel to school.
The JRSO contribute to the work of the Eco Group and the Eco Topics of Health and Wellbeing, Climate Actions and Transport.
We communicate all the initiatives on our School Notice Board.
We take part in the Big Talk and Wheel where for a whole week we encourage people to scoot, bike, or walk to school. This is so we achieve our eco code of encouraging safer, healthier and more eco-friendly travel to school. We give out stickers to everyone who takes part manage to get 3 out of 5 of the days as walk and wheel days.
Every year in the first term of Airyhall School takes part in the Hands Up Survey where the JRSO collects information from every learner in the school on how they travel to school. This information is then sent to the Hands Up Survey organisers and is collated with statistics from Aberdeen City Council and National statistics from the whole of Scotland.
The JRSO work closely with Police Scotland to take part in the Police Scotland Speed Campaign. The JRSO stand outside the school on Countesswells Road in the morning with two Police Officers. This is a stop and educate initiative. The Police Officers stop motorists who are travelling over the speed limit of 20mph and if they agree our learners will ask them questions about why they are travelling over the speed limit.
The Big Bike Show is organised by the JRSO to excite and inspire learners to get out on their bikes. It is run by Adventure Aberdeen and includes lots of different types of bikes that learners Primary 4-7 can have a shot on. The PTA very kindly offer to pay for this.
We communicated with our parent/carers about a consultation on safer pathways in the local area. This is an initiative organised by the local community council.
We received information from the Braeside and Mannofield Community Council to say that residents were concerned about learners and parents who were travelling on bikes not paying attention to pedestrians. The Community Council therefor decided to pay for the 'Bells for Bikes' Campaign where they provided bells for learners and parents to use to safely warn pedestrians they were coming.
Our Parent Council funds the Clever Never Goes Campaign where learners are educated on keeping themselves safe around strangers.
We have recently updated our Codes of Conduct for Learners and for parents/carers and visitors. These are displayed for all to see and shared on social media, Seesaw, Google Classroom and the school newsletter. We plan to launch these in term 1 2023
At Airyhall we have provided racks for children to put their bikes and scooters during school hours.
We communicate with parents/carers about road safety issues in our newsletter.
We take part in Magic Allan’s Magic Road Safety Show where the important messages about Road Safety are shared in a fun and exciting way.
At Airyhall we are fortunate to be able to take part in Bikeability One and Bikeability Two. We have teachers, PSAs and parents who are trained in Bikeability. Without these dedicated staff and volunteers along with a little help from Adventure Aberdeen we wouldn’t be able to run this initiative. Bikeability One is held in the playground with Primary 6 and Bikeability Two is help in the streets around the school with Primary 7.
We have some posters up around the school to encourage motorists to keep to the speed limit and we are working on some posters on Positive Parking in the local area.
The JRSO regularly holds Road Safety Assemblies to inform Learners about having safer, healthier and more eco-friendly travel to school.
We have our own Road Safety Planner which details which topics on Road Safety should be covered at different stages.
The JRSO are planning for going for the Cycle Friendly Award once we have finished consulting on our School Travel Plan.
