Whilst we offer individualised training to all schools who have pupils with hearing loss, the presentation below is a very thorough overview of general deaf awareness. The aims of this training are:
To develop your understanding of the impact that a hearing loss can have on a child’s language development and communication.
To develop awareness of a range of communication strategies that can be implemented to ensure deaf children have access to the whole curriculum.
To develop your understanding of the ear, and how it works, and different types and degrees of deafness.
To provide information about the benefits, and limitations, of deaf friendly digital delivery.
To provide you with information about where you can access further advice.
The National Children's Deaf Society (NDCS) have some very useful training modules depending on setting:
Introduction to Deaf Awareness (CPD accredited)
Introduction to Childhood Deafness (CPD accredited)
Supporting Children with a Suspected Hearing Loss in the Early Years
Introduction to Temporary Hearing Loss (CPD accredited)
Technology for Inclusion and Independence (CPD accredited)
Impact of Bullying on Deaf Children and Young People (CPD accredited)
Deaf Awareness presentations are planned together with the pupil and their Teacher of the Deaf.
The pupil's point of view, their hearing loss and what helps them to learn support the individualisation of presentation creation and delivery.
Deaf Awareness presentations are planned together with the pupil and their Teacher of the Deaf.
Pupils in secondary school are encouraged and supported, to create and deliver their Deaf Awareness sessions to their school staff as independently as possible. This supports pupils to develop their self- advocacy skills. Their Teacher of the Deaf will support and help to structure their presentation throughout this process.
