Higher
Course Overview
The study of higher History provides students with insights into their own lives and into the wider world in which they live. By examining the past, students can better understand their own communities, their country and the world. The course also allows pupils to improve their literacy and critical thinking skills.
The course comprises three mandatory units:
Scottish History: Migration and Empire, 1830 – 1939 A study of the reasons why people migrated, the experience of immigrants in Scotland, the impact of Scottish emigrants on the Empire and the impact of the Empire on Scotland.
British History: Changing Britain 1851 – 1951 A study of the growth of democracy, votes for women, the Liberal Reforms 1906-14 and the Labour Welfare Reforms 1945-51.
European and World History A study of aspects of the history of Twentieth Century Germany and the USA including the reasons for the rise of the Nazis, reasons why the Nazis were able to maintain power, the effectiveness of the New Deal programme in tacking the Great Depression in 1930s America and the reasons why Britain followed a policy of appeasement in then1930s.

Assessment Methods
Component 1: Question paper 1 — British, European and world history (44 marks, 1 hour and 30 minute exam) Component 2: Question paper 2 — Scottish history (36 marks, 1 hour and 30 minute exam)
Component 3: Assignment (30 marks, 1 hour and 30 minute write up under exam conditions)
Entry Requirements
While entry is at the discretion of the department, pupils would normally be expected to have attained:
Grades A – C in National 5 History or another Social Subject.
