Foundation Apprenticeships

What are Foundation Apprenticeships? 

Foundation Apprenticeships are offered in a range of subjects that relate directly to industry jobs. The course is designed to bridge the gap between school and the workplace. Foundation Apprenticeship courses comprise of 1 elements: 

• • Theory (Usually completing an NPA at SCQF Level 6) and;

  • 1 day per week (or 2 half days) Work Placement (working towards SVQ Units at SCQF Level 6)

How are Foundation Apprenticeships assessed? 

You will be assessed using a variety of methods for the classroom element of the course (NPA). All assessments are internal and there is no final exam. You will also be assessed on placement to ensure you have met the requirements of practical element of the course.

Through ABZ Campus and our School Links partnership with NESCOL you can study:

• Business Skills (Level 6)

• Construction (Level 4 only)

• Creative and Digital Media (Level 6)

• Electrical Engineering (Level 6)

• Hospitality (Level 4/5)

• IT (Hardware/Systems Support) (Level 6)

• IT (Software Development) (Level 6)

• Mechanical Engineering (Level 6)

Who should consider taking a Foundation Apprenticeships? 

University Pathway - Foundation Apprenticeships will help you to meet your University entry requirements. Universities recognise FAs at the same level as Highers, if your FA is related to the degree you wish to study. Some Universities even give you credit for 2 Highers if you pass an FA (including RGU). More information can be found in the chart below. 

College Pathway - Foundation Apprenticeships can help you to meet your College entry requirements. Some colleges will guarantee direct entry to certain courses if you have passed a related FA. Others include FAs as part of the entry requirements along with some other subjects. More information can be found in the chart below. 

Apprenticeship/Employment Pathway - This type if course is an good option for you. It will allow you to develop practical, work related skills. These will be very relevant for you, especially if you intend to move into a similar industry when you leave school. FAs can lead directly into Modern Apprenticeships.
