National 5 Skills for Work

Course Overview

Sport and Recreation: Skills for Work National 5 comprises of four Units of work all assessed internally.  The four Units are: 

Sport and Recreation: Assist with a Component of Activity Sessions 

In this Unit candidates will assist in the planning and delivery of a component within an activity session for both a group and single client.  This will include carrying out risk assessments, health and safety procedures and emergency procedures. They will further aid in reviewing the session with the clients and use this to inform future planning of activity sessions. 

Sport and Recreation: Employment Opportunities in the Sport and Recreation Industry 

In this Unit candidates will source information about career pathways and identify the skills, qualifications and experience needed to pursue these.  This will allow them to map their own skills and pursue further training where required to meet industry requirements. 

Sport and Recreation: Assist with Fitness Programming

In this Unit pupils’ will develop the ability to plan and organise a physical training plan for a client.  They will assist in establishing the client’s fitness baseline and create a training plan based on the client’s objectives.  They will monitor the client’s progress and review the training plan to make adaptations when required to ensure success. 

Sport and Recreation: Assist with Daily centre Duties 

This Unit aims for pupils’ to gain experience in setting up, taking down and storing of equipment in line with an organisations policy and procedures. They will also gain experience in checking for faults with equipment and how these might be dealt with. They will gain experience in cleaning and tidying areas within the organisation, choosing the correct materials and appropriate personal protective equipment for the task. They will finally be assessed on their ability to assist with and respond to client’s needs.

Assessment Methods

To achieve the course award candidates must successfully achieve all the Units which make up the course.  Candidates will be asked to create a portfolio of work/ evidence which could include, a log book, observation checklists etc. that must be signed off by the person responsible in line with SQA standards. 

Learning and Teaching Approaches

The Learning and Teaching will be delivered through a practical, experiential approach supplemented by classroom based theory lessons and homework.
