Exercise and Fitness Leadership
NPA Level 6
Course Overview
The NPA Exercise and Fitness Leadership is geared to support you if you wish to pursue Exercise and Fitness as a possible career path. The course will offer you a range of options to lead others across a range of fitness activities where you will develop your leadership and knowledge of fitness.
Within the course you will complete 3 of the following 5 units:
Exercise and Fitness: Cardiovascular Training
Exercise and Fitness: Fixed Weight Training
Exercise and Fitness: Free Weight Training
Exercise and Fitness: Circuit Training
Exercise and Fitness: Exercise to Dance
Within the units you look at the muscles required to perform along with targeted exercises for each muscle group. You will plan and lead on activities in relation to the chosen units named above. The course will be a mixture of practical and theory.

Assessment Methods
This course is internally assessed on an ongoing basis. Assessment of the units will involve a range of approaches from practical task observations, short response questions, investigative projects and other assessments.
You are also required to lead part of a session for each of the 3 chosen units. For example lead a 10 minute exercise to dance session or lead on a circuit training session. You will be assessed on a pass/ fail basis on your ability to lead in these 3 units.
Homework will be issued on a regular basis to support and prepare the candidates for the unit assessments.
Entry Requirements
This National Progression Award is suitable for a wide range of candidates. Candidates must have a strong interest in Sport, Fitness and Activity development. This may include S5 and S6 candidates who have achieved National 5 or Higher PE awards. Candidates who are considering this course must be highly self-motivated and able to work independently outside of school to complete projects and investigations. Candidates considering this course must discuss the suitability of this choice with a member of the PE staff.
Recommended Next Steps in S6
Higher Physical Education may be an option if students can demonstrate Higher level performance in 2 activities.
