I am Henock Woldemichael Woldemariam, an Assistant Professor of Food Engineering at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU) since 2015. Prior to joining AASTU, I spent nearly a decade at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology. I earned my PhD in Food Engineering from Addis Ababa University in 2022 under the DAAD-Home Grown Sandwich Program. I was a Guest Researcher at the DIL German Institute of Food Technologies from 2017 to 2020 in Quakenbrück, Germany.
I teach various undergraduate and graduate courses related to Food Science, Technology, and Engineering. I have been supervising and co-supervising numerous MSc and PhD students. In addition to teaching, I have held several academic positions, including Head of Research Grant Management Office, Associate Dean for Research and Technology Transfer, Chair for Food and Beverage Process, Chair for Applied Human Nutrition, Research and Publication Officer, Academic Program Coordinator, and Distance Program Coordinator.
I am a core member of the Biotechnology and Bioprocess Center of Excellence and an associate member and thematic leader in the Nanotechnology Center of Excellence and associate member in the Sustainable Energy Center of Excellence, where I lead and participate in different thematic researches and projects. I am also leading the Food Research Laboratory and the Food Quality and Safety Research Group.
I serve as an Expert Committee member on Food Additives (JECFA), administered jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), representing Ethiopia for the period 2023-2027. I am an active member of several professional societies and serve as a reviewer for a few esteemed international journals. Additionally, I am the Co-Founder and General Manager of ETH Food Consultancy PLC.
I am passionate about teaching and research and continuously seek innovative solutions to address critical food sector challenges in Ethiopia and beyond. Outside of work, I enjoy playing football and socializing with colleagues and friends.
