All public school employee in the State of Michigan have a mandatory retirement account with the State of Michigan Office of Retirement Services (ORS). The ORS gives new employees 75 calendar days from the date the first check is issued to select a retirement plan, after which they default new employees into a plan which cannot be changed. Full Time, Contracted (not hourly) Employees and some Part Time Contracted Employees are eligible for fringe benefits through AAPS including Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, AD&D, Long Term Disability and other optional insurance plans.
Contracted employees in the Paraprofessional Benefit Class (Teacher Assistants, Child Care Workers) become eligible for benefits on the 1st of the month following 60 days of employment with the district per the AAEA/Paraprofessional Union Contract.
Contracted employees in All Other Benefit Classes become benefit eligible the 1st of the month following their Hire Date per their Union Contracts.

Earned Sick Time Act (ETSA) - Sick time accrued under ESTA will run concurrently with any sick time provided under a collective bargaining agreement or individual contract. Employees will not receive additional sick time under ESTA if their existing collective bargaining agreement provides benefits equal to or greater than those mandated by ESTA.
Under ESTA Eligible employees will accrue 1 hour of leave time for every 30 hours worked (does not include paid time off); time will carry over from year-to-year; and employees are only permitted to carryover the maximum of 72 hours of paid leave in a school year.
Contracted employees through AAPS receive Sick and Personal Business days to be used throughout the year. These amounts are granted at the start of each contract year. If a New Hire Start Date is after the beginning of the contract year, Sick and Personal Business days will be prorated based on the employee's Start Date.
Any contractual Sick or Personal Business days not used at the end of the contract year will roll over as Sick time for the next contract year.
