A2 STEAM School
2014-Present

Students from Mrs. Pierce's Class focused on the history of A2 STEAM School. They thought like historians throughout this project. Their thinking culminated in the creation of a historical marker for public display. 8th-grade students from Ms. Bednar's African American Studies class helped them to create a podcast. A2 STEAM is a Project Based Learning school where all are welcome. It opened in 2014 in the old Northside School building. Kids from all over the Ann Arbor area come to this school to learn about science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The school changed because parents in the neighborhood wanted a better school. They thought Project Based Learning would be fun.

Just before STEAM opened, Northside had about 200 students. By 2016, the school had about 600 students. For the first few years, there was construction every summer to make the building bigger. They added a new gym and many new classrooms to grow the program from kindergarten through 5th grade to young 5’s through 8th grade. They also changed the inside of the school. All the new parts of the building are blue. They added another playground for little kids and some gaga ball pits. The fifth graders added a chicken coop to the little playground.

Students show their project work each year at special events called expos. They also celebrate other special events like March is reading month and National African American Parent Involvement Day. Joan Fitzgibbon, fondly known as Ms. Fitz, was the first principal. The mascot is the Phoenix and the logo is a robot designed by a former student. The specials classes at the school are library, art, music, gym, and IDEA lab or STEAM lab.

A2 STEAM at Northside is a great school where you can make friends and get educated. We hope to see you there!
