Reflection on Work
Self Portrait
Ink and Watercolor
10x5
I chose this assignment because I wanted to push myself and work with a medium and style I am not as familiar with: realistic watercolor and ink. I came up with the idea by initially thinking back to the Art Fundamentals self-portraits. My class created colorized portraits that were very bold; I wanted this self-portrait to have a similar bold and bright look. So I thought pink and black would be a fitting color combination and imagined a pink face over black and white stripes. I knew it was done when I looked at it and didn’t want to blend any more areas together. Initially I went back two separate times to blend color sections together that did not look “right.” Ultimately I am really happy with this piece, I am proud of myself for creating a self-portrait (I haven’t made one since my Drawing and Painting class sophomore year!). I look forward to developing my realistic drawing and painting skills further this year.
Dream Tree House
Ink, Watercolor, Guache
12x12
This summer I created a studio for myself in our shed out back, on one of the walls is a variety of magazine clippings that I deem my “inspiration board.” Many of the clippings are of homes from Dwell magazine, one of my favorites. There was this specific home that had beautiful dark washed wood and a modern feel, another had a more natural-colored wood, and the third had a bright, bold, blue interior. I drew inspiration from each of these three houses and began to draw plans for my dream tree house. I took a lot of time planning and sketching the tree house and designing the various components. I really enjoyed sketching the perspective and playing around with ink, watercolor, and gouache. I love houses and love thinking of my dream home, so I would really like to continue drawing realistic houses. I am really happy with this piece, I knew it was done when there was detail everywhere you looked. Whether that’s in the grain of the wood or the leaves on the trees.
