Final Project of AP Studio 2017
Although I have worked with paint before, I have never done so in this way. I painted in a pretty monochromatic color scheme, and had a few accent colors. I also used acrylic skins in my work for the first time. I think that this style of slightly abstract work was new for me, but I really enjoyed it.
I connected it to NYC in two ways: Alex Sheriff and the MET. Sheriff’s work really inspired me when I saw it in NYC and his use of color in shape connected to the drawings of the marbled floor in the MET. I think my piece has verve and is interesting to look at due to all the layers and elements within it. The layering was inspired by Sheriff’s work and it was looking at his work that allowed me to kind of forget the realistic style that I have been working in for so long.
I learned that not having a plan and painting in a creative & free flowing way can be very rewarding. I was experimenting with a lot of elements and ultimately I really enjoyed the process. For months I have been letting this idea grow and develop, it all started with a drawing I did on the bus back from NYC. That made me think about Sheriff’s work and how imaginative and fun it was. Then one day in class I had an idea for a piece that could combine these elements. I quickly sketched it out and have had it in my mind ever since. I want this piece to be the first of many in a series. This piece is a monochromatic piece and I could see myself creating more that each have a different color scheme. I really enjoyed looking at Sheriff’s work and will continue to reference it when creating art this summer.
