Small group activity - Investigating properties of parallelograms. NOTE: Each group member is responsible for their own drawings, measurements and conclusions, but you should discuss your conclusions with your partners.

• Draw a parallelogram and label it.
• Measure all sides, angles and diagonals. Also, measure the 4 segments formed by the intersecting diagonals.
• Write any conclusions about your measurements.
• Compare your conclusions with your group members and with the properties of parallelograms recorded on the green reference sheet.
• How can you find the area of this parallelogram?

We discussed some examples of naming quadrilaterals using the best name that takes into account most of the properties, as well as reviewing the slope of a line, slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines, and the Pythagorean theorem in examples involving quadrilaterals.

• Mini- lesson: Watch the following tutorial on classifying quadrilaterals, then use the templates that were provided in class to create your own graphic organizer.
• NOTE: The tutor in the video makes the assumption that if two sides appear parallel to each other then they have to be parallel, but please remember that you should have your pictures marked with "arrows" on the lines or segments that are parallel in order to use that kind of information! You may take your own notes on the page with the transcript of the video if you wish. You may also watch the video again if needed.
• Apply what you learned today & use the graphic organizer provided to create your own graphic organizer for classifying various quadrilaterals based on one or more of their properties. Please see below for more detailed explanations:
  • 1. Look at the green paper that I gave you today and pick one of the properties listed there (for examples: opposite sides are congruent).
  • 2. You may use two- column notes or a top- down web to organize the quadrilaterals that have the property that you chose or don't have that property (in my example: parallelograms, rectangle,rhombus, square, kite go in the column with quadrilaterals that have opposite sides congruent to each other, while the trapezoid and isosceles trapezoid go in the other column without that property).
  • 3. Repeat the same idea with another property.
  • NOTES: You may work with a partner (or two) to create this graphic organizer.
  • You should pick at least one property for classifying quadrilaterals, but I think that you can all do more than that.
• Hw due 1/29 - Finish the class work (create the graphic organizer as explained above).

Period 1 - We did a mini- lesson on simplifying radicals today, then did more practice examples. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions on their last solving linear equations assignment, and work on Assistments for Unit 1 (due September 24th).

Period 7 - More practice examples solving linear equations, using the definition of a midpoint, and working on Assistments.

Hw due 9/17 - Continue/ finish your individual assignment on solving linear equations on p. 16 in the packet for Unit 1 and work on your Assistments (dues September 24).

Students completed some warm-up problems to check their prior skills on solving linear equations and determine what assignments they will have to complete.

Period 1 - We discussed some of the basic tools of Geometry: points, lines, planes, rays, segments, and introduced some new terms: collinear, coplanar, axiom, postulate. We also discussed the 4 most important postulates in Geometry.
