Pass-Offs

**Please see the pass-off line lists/sheets on the right side of this page!**

Certain lines in the Standard of Excellence book are considered a "pass-off" line. I will give a certain amount of pass-off time most days of the week depending on how much material we cover each day. During pass-off time, students will perform their current pass-off line in front of the class. They will receive credit for the "pass-off" is if the line is "A" quality- with good rhythm, correct notes, good tone, etc. If a student does not pass off a line, I will move on to the next student; however, if they pass off their line, they can go on to the next line.

With this type of testing, students who are excelling can move ahead while students who are having a harder time can move a little slower at their own pace. The pass-off sheets at the bottom of this page list the lines that are considered pass-offs in each book. Each quarter, students will be given a certain number of pass-offs that must be completed by the end of the quarter. Students are not allowed to repeat the same pass-offs in another quarter.

Pass-off Rankings:

  • One line in the book = 1 pass-off

  • One scale with arpeggio not memorized = 2 pass-offs

  • One scale with arpeggio memorized = 4 pass-offs

  • Chromatic scale not memorized (range depends on grade level) = 2 pass-offs

  • Chromatic scale memorized = 4 pass-offs

  • Audition for all-county/all-district band = 4 pass-offs

  • Making all-county/all-district band = 8 pass-offs

In addition to passing off lines during class, students can submit pass-off videos online to the Canvas website.
