Content Mapping
Topics covered in any book should be pedagogically sound and internally consistent but also (1) relate to the needs of the marketplace and (2) provide a new look not already available in competing texts.
In developing the content, we looked to the needs of different professional actuarial associations. We focused on the four following associations:
CAS: Casualty Actuarial Society
IAA: International Actuarial Association
IFoA: Institute and Faculty of Actuaries
SoA: Society of Actuaries
The mapping is complex. To summarize our thoughts, the Contents Mapping .pdf file provides an overview. It includes the relationship between our table of contents, learning objectives of the four actuarial associations, and competing texts. Our Reference page is one source of information for the these associations and the competing texts.
Part A on Foundations introduces loss data analytics together with some foundations of statistics needed for later chapters. This material provides core technical methods that all actuaries should know. We call it "the basics." So, the ContentsMappingPart file provides a more detailed map of the learning objectives of the four associations with our Part A chapters in the form of a matrix. More details about this mapping are in the Excel file ContentsMappingPartA_30Dec2016.xls.
Part B on Short term insurance assumes knowledge of material developed in Part A and provides background knowledge for advanced actuarial exams (as well as helping to reinforce the foundation ideas in Part A). For the advanced exams, we focus on offerings of the CAS and SoA (hopefully, other contributors will look at the other organizations in the future.) More details about this relationship are in the Excel file ContentsMappingPartB_02May2016.xls.
