Revolutionary Windsor 2001

The Event

Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16, 2001

On these two days, Windsor, CT was the host of a remarkable piece of historic recreation called Revolutionary Windsor 2001. Not merely a battle re-enactment, Revolutionary Windsor was a full weekend of ceremonies, musters, drills and battles. Re-enactment groups came from all around the eastern seaboard to participate, and the whole town of Windsor came out to support the effort. The weekend provided the chance to really experience what it was like to live in Colonial Windsor during the Revolutionary War.

Description

The event took place at four separate locations in Windsor. Both the Loyalist and the Patriot camps were stationed at the Ellsworth Homestead on Palisado Avenue. Visitors were able to witness camp life, and talk to the soldiers. Of special interest was the care and feeding of the horses - essential to the mounted cavalry units that were there. Of course, visitors could tour the very historic Oliver Ellsworth homestead too. Further south down Palisado Avenue, the Palisado Green featured tours of the historic buildings, the Windsor Historical Society, and the First Church cemetery. Demonstrations included spinning, medical battle procedures, live music, and a colonial ham and bean supper at First Church in the evening. At the Windsor Green, both Loyalist and Patriot groups practiced military drills, and quickly became involved in a skirmish. The gunshots rang out, and the Loyalist group retreated to the Loomis Chaffee field to regroup. In pursuit were the Patriots, and they soon faced off again in the decisive battle!
