Homework

Assignments:

Reading: The most important homework for a child who is in the early reading stage is for them to read to you and you read to them. Please spend time throughout the week engaging in a special “reading time” with your child.

Phonics: In the 1st plastic sleeve you will see a phonetic decodable reader. This is to help your child practice sounding out words they have previously learned. Decoding is the pathway to becoming an efficient reader. Here’s a link to the same stories online so that they can have pictures! https://sites.google.com/s/1O0sI03ON-ZxmAXZOU4Y3PZK3d6t-oj1W/p/0Bw4YiLb63jfpOUJNejJTMUJLaXM/edit

Spelling: In the 2nd plastic sleeve you will see a list of spelling words and 3 sight words in which the students will be tested on each week. This testing is done in a whole group setting. I will say the word, use it in a sentence and then repeat the word.

Math Fluency: In the 3rd plastic sleeve you will see a set of math facts to practice. Each week the kiddos will take a 2 minute timed test over these facts. (11 problems) Everyone will start with the +0 facts, then continue to the next facts.

Sight Words: In the 4th plastic sleeve you will see sight words. Please shuffle the cards each time you study so they do not memorize the order. Each week I will test them using their own cards. If they miss any, I will leave those cards and add new ones to the stack for the next week.

*Sight Word Fluency is being able to say the word within 3 seconds without trying to sound it out. (smile) So…flash a card to your child (count to 3 in your head) if they do not know the word, then tell them the word and move on. Some children cannot learn sight words by flashing the cards...I have given you a sheet with fun activities to do that will help them practice on the back of this sheet.

Homework folders are sent home every Monday and are taken up every Friday. Homework folders will look different for every child depending on each child's need.

Here is a book link below. This is a great way to help build up your child's fluency and confidence. The more they read, the better they feel about it. This is something you can read as an extension to your homework reading, the point is to just read! :)

These readers are designed to help students at ALL reading levels.
