Tips for Working on Speech at Home
* Around the House: Find items in your house that have your child's target speech sounds and practice saying the name of the objects and using the word in a sentence.
* Use the News: Help your child look for words with their target sounds in the headlines and comic strips of the newspaper. Make a list of the words to practice later.
* Sound Walk: As you walk through your neighborhood or a park, look for objects that have names containing the target sounds. See who can discover the most objects.
* Sound Collage: Cut out pictures from magazines, newspapers, and coloring books and make a collage to hang up.
* Trip to the library: Visit the library and help your child find books that have characters with names including their target sounds. Read the book out loud together.
Tips for Working on Language at Home
* Puppet Play: Practice telling stories using puppets. Give your child story topics to get started and encourage creativity (e.g. "Today I got a big box in the mail and it was....").
* "How to" Games: Practice sequencing skills by asking your child to give directions (e.g. how to set table, wrap a present, make a snowman, etc).
* Category Box: Find old shoe boxes and fill them with pictures and objects related to categories (e.g. colors, food, etc). Talk about the different items in your box (e.g. compare/contrast, function, etc).
* Mix-up a Game: Play a game you have at your house and mix it up. For example, play Simon Says with multi-step actions (e.g. "Fly like a bird and stick out your tongue."). During memory make up silly sentences when your words don't match.
* Read, Read, Read: When reading ask your child to define vocabulary, answer wh-questions, and retell the story.
