Broadband

We have been working on 2 fronts regarding feasibility of broadband. First, following approval of study funds at Town Meeting, we sought proposals to evaluate need and feasibility. The responses we received exceeded our budget to a point where a rethink was necessary. Second, we have we working with BRPC as through a Direct Local Technical Assistance Grant to discuss broadband strategies for towns and cities that already have some level of service. Williamstown was the lead applicant in setting up that group which included Great Barrington, Pittsfield and North Adams. Subsequently, after realizing that there wasn't necessarily an easy path for all of those communities, we have opted to jointly submit an application for an Efficiency and Regionalization Grant for $198,000 to undertake the type of study that we intended for Williamstown, but now for all participating communities (the original four as well as Lenox and Lee). Collectively, we represent 64% of the population of Berkshire County. Williamstown will be the lead applicant for this grant (this is the program that funded the North Adams/Adams/Williamstown dog kennel initiative last year). Andy Hogeland will provide additional information as he has been the driving force in compiling the information and preparing the draft application which is attached below.
