Battle of the Books

Welcome to the 6th grade Battle of the Books specials' class. This class is based on the North Carolina Battle of the Books competition for both middle and elementary schools. The concept is designed to increase student reading, exposure to different genres and reading levels, and attention to detail.

Battle of the Books consists of students reading as many titles from a selected list of 20. These titles range in reading levels (which are provided), content, and genres. At the completion of a book, students will write 10 questions concerning details from the book. These questions will be written using a google form. Once the questions are complete the student will move on to another title from the list. Students will consult each other as a team to determine what titles to read so they can cover as many titles to make their team knowledgeable and competitive in the final tournament.

Teams will begin practicing with the student questions once we have enough in the bank. The practice tournaments will be in preparation for the final tournament at the end of the school year. During the tournament each team member will answer questions regarding the books, but the team members never act on their own- they ALWAYS have their team members to consult for the answers! Two points are awarded for the correct book title, one point for the correct book author.

Each BOB class will be assigned a portion of the reading list for the semester. Students/teams will chose books from this list. Students are allowed to take these books home to read. The book list will then change at the turn of the semester.

All students are expected to bring these books to class. Not bringing the book is the same as forgetting homework. Remember- this is a graded class***!

Some of these titles are are school property while others are being borrowed from the Herrick Memorial Library. Students are responsible for the proper care of these items. Items that are damaged are lost will result in a student fine that will need to be paid for the replacement copy.

***PLEASE NOTE: Students are not graded on the speed of their reading, but they will be required to keep a digital reading log to track their reading. Reading logs are graded and are timestamped each time they are submitted. Grades are based on reading consistently (4 times minimum per week). I will also be conferencing with students about their reading (I have read ALL the titles).

The final tournament, in which ALL 6th GRADE STUDENTS are required to participate, will be held on May 24th during the school day.
