Literacy is taught in an integrated approach through a balanced literacy program.
Readers Workshop
During Readers Workshop, students begin by reading to self or reading with a partner selected books from their personal book bins. Children have the opportunity to also choose from different reading and writing choices, and work independently while I meet with individual students or small groups of students.
The choices include:
Fundations
Fundations is a program that builds the foundation for reading and spelling. Beginning with letter sounds and letter formation. Moving to spelling and segmenting sounds in words to building fluency in reading.
Writer's Workshop
Writer’s Workshop develops an understanding of what writers do, learn to become authors and view themselves as writers. Writer’s Workshop always begins with the children coming together with a mini-lesson of direct instruction of the teaching point for the day. Children then go off to practice these skills independently at their own level. Writer’s Workshop ends with writers sharing their work.
