Create Your Own Civilization (SLS)
It is your job to create your own civilization from the ground up. Here is what you will need to create:
Name – Come up with a name for your civilization.
Population
- How many people live in your civilization?
Geography – Pick a location to build your civilization. You can pick any place on Earth, but make sure that you can explain the following two things about your location:
- How will this location sustain crops and livestock?
- How will this location be advantageous for defense against attacks?
Cultural Universals
Government
- Who will lead your government? What kind of government is this? (See the Systems of Government on the back of this page)
- What tasks will the government be in charge of?
- What are the laws of your civilization?
- Why did you choose this type of government?
Religion
- What or whom do you worship?
- Why do the citizens worship this thing, being, or person?
- Where is your religious center located? What is it?
Specialization of Labor
- Describe at least three jobs that people will need to do in your civilization. Include the job title, a job description (what will the person be expected to do in this job), and a salary (what will they receive for their work).
Education
- What are the expectations surrounding school?
- Do children have to go to school? If so, until what age?
- What is taught in school?
Recreation
- Games and sports?
- Use of leisure time?
Language/Communication
- What language do people speak?
- How do people communicate?
Transportation
- How do people in your civilization get around?
- What types of transportation do they have?
Complete the following activities:
- Laws – Come up with at least eight laws that your civilization will have to follow. Devise a plan to inform every person about these laws (tablets, statue, etc.).
- Map – Draw an aerial map of your civilization that shows where the following things are located:
- Market
- House of worship
- Town square
- Villages (houses)
- Farmland
- Roads
- Government buildings
- Anything else?
- Flag – Design a flag for your civilization.

Some Systems of Government
Monarchy –
· ruled by a royal family (King, Queen, Prince, Princess, etc.)
Oligarchy –
· ruled by a small group of “important” people
Democracy –
· ruled by the people of the civilization, they make important decisions, usually done through representatives
Theocracy –
· ruled by a God or Gods through the people because the whole country shares the same religion
