5th Grade Passion Project
2022-23
What is a Passion Project?
The 5th grade passion project will be something that you will work on for the entire school year. At the start of the year you will select a topic that should be something that really captures your interest and is something you have not explored before. You should choose a topic or idea that is satisfying, creates happiness, and inspires curiosity. From there, you will pick a goal within that topic. What do you hope to accomplish by pursuing this passion? This project is your tiny (or huge) contribution to better yourself, and your community. In June you will showcase your new learning and all your hard work with the class, school, and the Wellesley community.
What am I expected to do each week?
Every week you are expected to spend a minimum of 60 minutes learning and developing your passion. You will be responsible for logging your time spent and having it signed by a parent. This will be checked each week by your teacher. Some ideas of how you could work on your passion each week include:
Watching informational videos about your topic and taking notes
Interviewing an expert in your area and taking notes/recording it
Practicing your passion (make sure to record yourself so you can show progress over time)
Reading articles about your passion and taking notes
Listening to podcasts about your passion and taking notes
How can my parents help me?
Since this is a project done completely out of school, having your parents help is an important piece of the project! Here are some ways that your family can help you with your project:
Signing your log each week after you have filled it out
Help you find resources connected to your topic
Taking you to the library to find related books
Determining other family members that are experts on your topic
How will I showcase my Passion Project at the end?
At the end of the year (most likely the last couple weeks of school), there will be an open house where you will present your project. It will be a wonderful time to celebrate all of the work, time, and effort you have put into your project. During this time you will be presenting to your Schofield community, families, and the Wellesley community, so you want to show off your best work. Some examples of how you could showcase your project are:
Videos that demonstrate your progress made throughout the year
Products created over time (for example, if you were working on drawing self-portraits, you might bring in a portfolio of all the work you have done)
Pictures taken over time
Journal entries/notes taken throughout the year that document your process
A poster presentation that demonstrates your work throughout the year
Written reflections about your journey
