Referring my child for School Counseling

School counseling is usually short-term in nature and most often play-based.  Referrals for individual counseling are usually made from a child’s teacher, directly from the parent, and/or sometimes based on observations, and with parent permission.  Our counseling program also offers small group counseling.  Referrals are similar to individual counseling though the nature of the groups tends to focus on specific topics or problems that several children all share.  This forum is especially helpful for children who might be feeling that they are alone in dealing with an issue.

I am always available by email at mlangevin@u32.org and you can leave a confidential voicemail for me on my line at school. Often I make time at the beginning of the day or right at the end of the day to meet as well, but if you want to be sure to meet in person just email or call ahead.  Reach me by phone at EMES at (802-223-7936 x303), Monday through Friday following the school calendar.

Guidance Class

Classroom guidance is an integral part of the program being offered at East Montpelier Elementary School.  Teaching guidance in the classroom gives the school counselor the unique opportunity to meet and get to know all the children in the school rather than a select few.  This allows for a proactive approach to dealing with common problems all children face.  The curriculum we use to ensure that lessons are comprehensive and developmentally appropriate is the Know Your Body health and guidance curriculum adopted by the district.  The topics for this age include social cognition, personal safety, problem solving, stress management and self esteem building.   KYB is a standards based curriculum that ties to the VT standards for health. In addition to KYB we pull from other resources like Puberty: The Wonder Years and Care for Kids, Kelso's Choice, Zones of Regulation, and Social Thinking.

Information on Consent and Confidentiality

School Counseling is considered a resource that all students should have access to in public education. The counseling is enhanced by communication and support between home and school.

The process of counseling is dependent upon trust between the counselor and the child.  One of the most powerful ways to build trust is for the counselor to maintain confidentiality of what is discussed during the counseling session.  To this end, the school counselor keeps what is discussed between themself and your child confidential except in the following cases:

Counseling at school is short-term brief counseling with a solution focus.  Additional counseling, when appropriate, may be referred for outside counseling.
