An avatar is an icon or figure that represents a particular person in a video game or on the Internet. I have students create avatars that represent their favorite things or past times. It could be as simple as a soccer ball. In digital citizenship classes, I inform students about the need for privacy. It is imperative for a child to understand not to associate their own face and name with information about their school, or where they live. The best alternative is to use an avatar. This lesson also helps me get to know my students better!
These are a couple of my avatars. I love technology, boots, the ocean and the visual arts. My wish is to truly care about each of my students.
I hope to follow these words of Wayne Dyer:
“My goal is not to be better than anyone else, but to be better than I used to be.
“When the choice is to be right or to be kind, always make the choice that brings peace.”
Here are just two quotes from Seymour Papert:
My basic idea is that programming is the most powerful medium of developing the sophisticated and rigorous thinking needed for mathematics, for grammar, for physics, for statistics, for all the “hard” subjects…. In short, I believe more than ever that programming should be a key part of the intellectual development of people growing up.
The role of the teacher is to create the conditions for invention rather than provide ready-made knowledge.
This is my latest avatar - I love tech and books.
They make me happy!
