CODAP

Price: Free Class Size: none

CODAP (Common Online Data Analysis Platform) is an easy-to-use data analysis environment designed for grades 5 through 14.

CODAP can be used across the curriculum to help students summarize, visualize, and interpret data, advancing their skills to use data as evidence to support a claim.

What is CODAP?

Just as language and numeric literacy involve understanding the world through words and

mathematical constructs, data literacy involves understanding the world through data

exploration.

How do you use?

Mr. Merchant will provide you with a sample data set in CODAP. Together we will figure out just what all that data means using several mathematical techniques.

We will do THIS and THIS on the first time in to familiarize ourselves with CODAP.

Then we get to go manipulate and play with huge data sets and try to make sense of it all!

No login required

You simply go to CODAP's Data Set Home Page and follow Mr. Merchant to get to the data set.

For Teachers (boring stuff but needs to be said!):

Getting Started with CODAP - Teacher Edition:

  • Have fun doing a simple tutorial using CODAP, Part I.

  • Continue playing with tutorial #2: CODAP, Part II.

  • Common Online Data Analysis Platform Startup Guide (PDF).

  • Sample CODAP Datasets come with data pre-loaded for you, along with a description of the dataset and suggestions for exploring. Choose from more than 50 datasets—from Earthquakes to trending YouTube videos, from Compound Interest to the Digits of Pi (infinity), and beyond! Search using keywords, or sort by categories: Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Miscellaneous.

Mathematical Technology

  • CODAP is a Mathematical Amplifier tool. It crunches data with ease saving hours of laborious and tedious time that can now be used for walking around the classroom and making sure everyone gets the help they need.

COPPA/FERPA compliant:

  • Read more about COPPA/FERPA.

ISTE Standards:

Students become Empowered Learners by reinforcing mathematical ideas on fun assessments.

Students are Digital Citizens by recognizing the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of everyone while learning and working in an interconnected digital world in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.

Students become Knowledge Constructors as they plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits.

Students are Innovative Designers and will exhibit a tolerance for ambiguity, perseverance and the capacity to work with open-ended problems.

Students become Computational Thinkers using CODAP as they Students collect data or identify relevant data sets, use digital tools to analyze them, and represent data in various ways to facilitate problem-solving and decision-making.

Students explore local and global issues as Global Collaborators and use collaborative technologies to work with others to investigate solutions within CODAP.

Cool features:

  • Teachers/Students can upload their own data into an easy-to-use web-based data analysis tool to create their own datasets, share visualizations, and discover data-driven insights. In the process, they will learn to understand the world through its data.

  • Sample CODAP Datasets come with data pre-loaded for you. Choose from more than 50 datasets.

  • There are "hands on" activities for students to manipulate data sets and drag a selector across the screen to select and deselect data points on the graph.

  • Check out the CODAP Community.

Limitations:

  • CODAP is limited to data sets and graphing models. There are no games or quizzes. It's full on war with the data!
