Here Are Some Fun Ways Your Child Can Practice Their Sight/Heart Words:
1.) Play concentration/memory with your child's words using two sets of index cards. Place the cards face down on the table in orderly rows. Each player takes a turn, turning two cards over. If the cards match, the player takes the pair and gets another turn. If they don't match, the player turns the cards back over and the next player has a turn. The player who has the most pairs at the end of the game is the winner.
**You can also use the two sets of index cards to play "Go Fish."
2.) Place word flash cards on the floor and have your child hop from one card to the next while saying the words out loud.
3.) Scavenger Hunt- Look for words in the books your child is reading. Flip through the pages and challenge your child to find and read as many sight words on each page he/she can. Your child does not need to read the entire sentence for this game, since he/she is just acting as a "sight word detective."
4.) Spell the words with their finger in the air, on the table, on someone else's back, or on a carpet.
5.) Hide your child's sight word flash cards throughout the house and ask your child to search for the cards. Each time they find a flash card, have your child spell the word and read it aloud.
6.) Flashlight Game- Turn off the lights. Tape words on the wall or ceiling. Use the flashlight to shine on the word then read it.
7.) Popsicle Words- Write sight words on popsicle sticks. Pull sticks out of a can, see how many you can read.
8.) See it, Say it, Write it- Show your child a word using their flashcards. Say the word. Take away the flashcard and have your child make the word. Read again and repeat.
9.) Word Swat- Write sight words on index cards and put them on the table. Call out a word and have your student swat it with a fly swatter or slap it with their hand.
Hands On- Have your child make/write words using:
*play dough- Have your child roll the play dough like a snake and form the letters in their sight words.
*shaving cream
*chalk- write sight words with chalk on the driveway. Have your child hop from word to word, reading them aloud.
*sand- use a 9x13 plastic storage container to hold the sand. Have your child use their finger to spell their sight words.
*magnetic letters- use magnetic letters to spell sight words on the refrigerator, or cookie sheet.
*alphabet stamps- Use alphabet stamps to stamp out sight words, then read them.
