Overall we have had a terrific school year and I want to thank all of you for the support you give your children, our students, everyday, and the support you have given us as a school. Enjoy the summer! I hope it is a safe, restful, and enjoyable one for you and your family.

Supply Boxes  As with last year, we will be using an online vendor, Staples School Kidz, so that you can conveniently order your child’s school supplies for next year at a very competitive price. Supply boxes are approximately $40 for each grade level and your child will receive everything he or she needs for the upcoming school year. Supply boxes are shipped directly to the middle school so you don’t even have to lug supply boxes to school. You can order supplies via a paper form that we sent out to students or online. The deadline to order via a paper form is June 22nd. The deadline to order online is June 23rd.

Ordering online is easy. First go to www.shopttkits.com and then enter WMS’s account number: 69352. An ordering screen will come up with a sixth grade supply box, a seventh grade supply box, and an eighth grade supply box. (There are also other items – backpacks, water bottles, and other supplies – that SchoolKidz wants to sell you. You are not required to purchase them.) Click “View” for the supply box for the grade your child will enter next year. The next screen will list all the school supplies in the box, which you will be able to add to your virtual shopping cart and purchase.

Purchasing supply boxes through SchoolKidz helps us, too. We will know that students will have the right materials for our organization systems. Supply boxes get shipped directly to the Middle School and students will receive them when they start organizing their binders in early September.

If you don’t want to order a supply box and rather purchase supplies on your own, please refer to the supply list for your grade level on our web site.

Eighth Grade Class Party  The eighth grade class party will be held this Friday June 16th, 6:00, at the Hellenic Cultural Center, 25 Bigelow Ave. Although students tend to dress up for this event, the student council and I want to emphasize that it a party that celebrates three years of growing and learning together at Watertown Middle School. The eighth grade class party is not a prom. I am looking forward to the celebration and it would be great to see as many eighth graders at the party as possible. Tickets are currently on sale in the main office for $15.

Eighth Grade Graduation  Eighth graders have a very busy, special day on Friday June 23rd. They will come to school, receive their report cards in homeroom, and attend the eighth grade awards assembly at 8:00 a.m. in the auditorium. The awards assembly will be immediately followed by a PTO-sponsored reception for eighth grade students and families at about 9:30. Graduation is at 10:00 in the auditorium and will go to about 11:00. There are enough seats in the auditorium to seat 2.5 family members for every graduate. We have never set seating limitations, but please be considerate of other families when you decide how many will attend graduation.

I am looking forward to eighth grade graduation day. This is a terrific class who supported one another and shared many memories during their three years at Watertown Middle School. Our eighth graders have tremendous potential, both individually and collectively, as they move to high school and beyond.

Awards Assemblies  Please mark your calendars for our awards assemblies. The sixth grade awards assembly is Wednesday June 21st at 8:00 in the auditorium. The seventh grade awards assembly is Thursday June 22nd at 8:00 in the auditorium. The eighth grade awards assembly precedes graduation on Friday June 23rd at 8:00 in the auditorium. June 23rd is the last day of school and an early release day for students.

Summer Reading Book  I am pleased to announce that our 2017 one school, one book selection is The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer Holm. “Eleven-year-old Ellie has never liked change. She misses fifth grade. She misses her old best friend. She even misses her dearly departed goldfish. Then one day a strange boy shows up. He’s bossy. He’s cranky. And weirdly enough … he looks a lot like Ellie’s grandfather, a scientist who’s always been slightly obsessed with immortality. Could this gawky teenager really be Grandpa Melvin? Has he finally found the secret to eternal youth?

All fifth, sixth and seventh grade students voted on five possible titles after a committee of avid middle school readers led by Ms. Maroni-Wagner and Ms. McDonagh narrowed down the possibilities. The Fourteenth Goldfish won in a landslide. The summer reading packet is online this year on our new website: www.wms1s1b.org. There will be printed copies of the packet in the office. Students will read a brief nonfiction article, “The Immortality Jellyfish,” as an introduction. Then they will read The Fourteenth Goldfish and fill out a chart that explores the book’s theme of immortality. Finally, students will be able to pick one of seven challenge options to complete over the summer.

The Fourteenth Goldfish is available in paperback, hardcover, eBook, or audiobook and costs about $7.00. There are many copies available at the Watertown Free Public Library.

Next Year’s Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment Program (SBIRTT)  In response to the Commonwealth’s March 2016 STEP Bill aimed to address the deadly opioid epidemic across our state, Watertown Public Schools has developed a required Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment Program for next year’s seventh and ninth grade students. Details of the program, links to resources, and an opt-out form are attached below the announcements. Please read the letter carefully. If you have any questions about SBIRTT, please contact Nurse Swift or me.

Move Up Days  Fifth grade students will visit Watertown Middle School during our move up days, June 13th for Hosmer students and June 15th for Lowell and Cunniff students. Students will meet in the auditorium and then follow a four-class mini-schedule in English, math, science, and geography to get a feel for how classes are like at the middle school. We will be focusing less on telling students what to expect next year and more modeling the kind of instruction (lots of project, activities, cooperative learning, etc.) that typically happens at the middle school.

WMS School Culture Survey For Parents and Guardians  Our school culture team is conducting a school culture survey and we would parents and guardians to fill it out. Students and staff have already been given similar surveys, and the team hopes to evaluate the results from all three surveys in order to identify strengths and areas of improvement for Watertown Middle School. The survey link is: https://docs.google.com/a/watertown.k12.ma.us/forms/d/1EXpj4MFDJHb43zl0dhOICHWvUfSmm3n6A-Y-W0vUCYg/edit

You can go to our web site for survey access as well. Thank you very much for your participation!

PowerSchool Parent/Student Portal  The PowerSchool Parent/Student Portal is open to parents and guardians. The portal will provide you with a view of your student’s attendance, historical grades, schedule, and contact information. Yesterday, parents and guardians of record should have received an email with login credentials inviting you to set up an account. Go on the district web site and click on “Power School” most of the way down in the “Quick Links” column on the right-hand side. Then, on the top-right of the page, click on the “Power School Video Tutorial” to create an account. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Brackett or Ms. Cardillo the main office and they will be happy to help you.
