Information Packets  Today we mailing out information packets to families. Enclosed inside the information packet is:

·         An information letter that has a label on the back with your child’s cluster and homeroom assignment.

·         Four forms to fill out: an information form; a medical form; a free and reduced price lunch form (if you are eligible); and a handbook signature form. (The information form denotes that your child is still in last year’s grade level. Your child’s grade level will be automatically updated before the first day of school.) (Also, our new 2017-18 WMS Handbook is not yet on the web site. We will post it as soon as the school committee approves it.) Please have your child turn the completed form to his or her new homeroom teacher on the first day of school.

·         An Eagle’s Nest Newsletter

·         A letter and dues envelope from the Watertown Middle School PTO. Please be generous!

School Supplies  If you purchased a Staples SchoolKidz supply box in June, you are all set – your child’s supply box will be at school on September 5th. If you still need to purchase school supplies for your child, please consult the supply list attached to the bottom of these announcement and also posted on our web site.

Summer Reading Book  Our summer reading book is The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer Holm. The book is available in paperback, hardcover, eBook, or audiobook and costs about $7.00. There are many copies available at the Watertown Free Public Library. If you haven’t done so already, please visit our web site, www.wms1s1b.org, for directions and options. Packets and projects are due to your child’s homeroom teacher on Friday September 15th.

Summer Math Packets  In June during move-up day your child received a summer math packet to complete over the break. Although our teachers did a good job communicating this expectation to students in June, we administrators did not do a good job maintaining the communication about math packets over the summer months. There has been much less communication about the math packets than the summer reading book and the links to the math packets were not located on the front page of our web site. Consequently, I believe that many students and families are unaware that students need to complete the summer math packet for their grade level. Because of this, we are extending the due date for the summer math packets to Monday October 2nd so that students who are just now aware of the assignment will have ample time to complete it. Additionally, we will hold help sessions after school in the library during the month of September for students who may be having trouble with some of the problems. Finally, we have posted links to the summer math packets (both the problem and solution sets) on the front page of the WMS web site.

Window Project  This summer, approximately 200 window units are being replaced in West Jr. High section of Watertown Middle School. The construction started right after the last day of school and is scheduled to be completed by the end of October, with all first and second floor classrooms having windows installed by the first day of school. I am pleased to announce that window replacement is ahead of schedule. We are expecting that classrooms in the basement will have new windows by the first day of school as well. Windows have not yet been installed in the stairwells on all floors, nor has a few very old windows in an office and a bathroom on the first floor. While all the window detail work and clean up will be complete within the classrooms by September 5th, there will still be some work to be done on the outside of the building. Work on these remaining items will continue on the weekends in September and October.

The new windows are double-paned tinted glass with aluminum frame construction. The lower window section opens inward for most of the units installed and all window openings will have screens. These highly efficient windows will make for a much more comfortable indoor environment than what had existed in this section of the building. In addition, great care has been taken to select a design that will enhance the beautiful architectural elements of the old West Jr. High School building.

The window project will remain in high gear up through Labor Day weekend. For this reason, we will not be having a sixth grade scavenger hunt in August this year.

First Day of School  The first day of school is Tuesday September 5th. School starts at 7:30 and students need to be in their homerooms at 7:40. Students are dismissed at 2:10 everyday. On the first day of school, sixth grade students will gather in the cafeteria and meet their homeroom teachers. Parents and guardians are welcome to arrive with their children in the cafeteria and stay for the sixth grade opening assembly in the auditorium. After the assembly, sixth graders will go back to their homerooms and follow an abbreviated schedule for the rest fo the day. Seventh and eighth grade students will go directly to their new homerooms. Teachers will be out in the hallways to welcome students and give directions. Seventh and eighth graders new to Watertown Middle School should meet their guidance counselors in the main office.

Open House / Guided Tour  Mr. Del Porto and I will be hosting a Watertown Middle School open house for families on Friday September 1st at 8:00 a.m. We will answer any questions you may have and take you on a guided tour of the school. This may be a good opportunity for those of you who are new to the school, whether you have a sixth grade student or have just moved into town. I hope to see you there!

Chromebooks  This year all students will have Chromebooks individually assigned to them for their use in all their classes during school hours. We strongly encourage parents and guardians to attend one of two Chromebook information sessions, either on Wednesday September 6th at 7:00 p.m. or Friday September 8th at 8:00 a.m.
