WMS Before and After School Programs Fall 2015
Watertown Middle School offers many different kinds of after-school activities. Sign-ups begin Monday, September 14th and end on Friday, September 18th. Clubs and the Learning Lab start the week of September 21st. Sports start sooner.
This fall, there are six different types of activities: Interscholastic Sports, Library Learning Lab, Community Explorers, the School Musical, Enrichment Clubs, and P.E. Clubs sponsored by the PEP Grant. Please read the description of each group of activities below.
The purpose of the middle school athletic program is to provide students an opportunity to develop athletic skills, sportsmanship, and team-play in a wide variety of sports. Some sports will field everyone; others will have tryouts. Many middle school sports teams have “A” and “B” teams, which give more students a chance to practice and play.
WMS sports sign-ups require a Clearance for Athletic Participation form, which is available in the Main Office. These orange cards must be filled out and returned to the nurse who will make sure the student’s physical is up to date. All physicals must be current (within 13 months of the last physical). Families of students participating in interscholastic sports must pay a one-time $160 activity fee, which encompasses all interscholastic sports for the entire school year.
Coaches will give out practice and game schedules for each sport. There was an introductory student meeting for all sports on Thursday September 10th after school; however, students still can sign up.
Fall sports offered are: Field Hockey Girls’ Soccer Boys’ Soccer Cross Country
LIBRARY LEARNING LAB
The Library Learning Lab is a place where students can go after school Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons, when they need help with their assignments or a place to do homework. There are also grade-specific tutorials at Library Learning Lab where students can get help with important assignments and subject matter. On Mondays we have seventh grade tutorials, on Tuesdays we have eighth grade tutorials, and on Thursdays we have sixth grade tutorials. Students of all grade levels can come to Library Learning Lab on any day to get help. Library Learning Lab is free.
Community Explorers is a full-year, two-day-a-week after school program for students that provides a variety of activities, including community field trips, shopping, cooking, and recreational and fitness programs. Community Explorers meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:15 – 4:15. Often, Community Explorers may go later, especially when they take field trips. The Community Explorers program runs for the full year and we do encourage students to attend both days per week for educational continuity purposes. There is a one-time $50 fee.
SCHOOL MUSICAL: LION KING JR.
Starting in late October, Mrs. Casey will produce and direct the musical, “Lion King Jr.”. Auditions will be held Tuesday September 22nd and Thursday September 24th. There are also many opportunities to learn about theater behind the scenes as part of the crew. Learn about lighting, sound, set design and construction as well as make-up, costumes and props. It’s sure to be fun, especially when it all comes together for the performances before family and friends. Performances for “Lion King Jr.” are March 3rd and 4th at 8:00 p.m. There is a $50 fee to participate.
Each season, the middle school runs enrichment clubs that meet one day a week after school, 2:15-4:15 and will last for 10 weeks. Participation in each of these clubs is subject to a $50 activity fee. Enrichment clubs can only run with a minimum of 10 students.
