WHS art is a broad program covering as many areas of 2d and 3d art. Course work focuses around teaching an understanding of the elements of art and how to visually communicate the elements in student work.
Art courses offered at WHS include introductory courses in ceramics and 2d art and design, intermediate courses in ceramics, drawing and painting, and advanced placement (AP) courses in drawing, 3d design, and 2d design. Courses are progressive and build upon prior coursework and instruction to increase the knowledge base of students and provide them with the skills to work through problems, both artistic and design related, using the creative process. These problem solving skills extend well beyond the arts into many different fields. Engineers use the creative process to develop solutions to problems that might not otherwise be obvious, skilled crafts people adapt techniques to match materials and conditions/ environments.
Though I would love to see every student become artist, designers, or architects, it isn't realistic. As such, I focus on developing an appreciation for art and it's elements so that students may understand and use the elements of art in their everyday lives.
