We appreciate our families and are committed to the ongoing development and growth of the WLA program to support our students, now and in the future!
MONTHLY PROGRESS REVIEW (MPR) GRADING
Student progress is evaluated monthly by the teacher and are based on student progress towards benchmarks, which are clearly defined in the course syllabus, and essential standards, as identified by the Washougal School District. These established progress benchmarks allow the teacher and student to assess the student’s educational progress in meeting the course learning standards. The grading rubric is as follows: No Data, Emerging Proficiency, Approaching Standard, Meeting Standard, and Exceeding Standard. A student will be considered to have made satisfactory academic progress in any monthly progress review when the student demonstrates progress toward meeting a minimum of one essential standard in at least 4 out of 6 subjects (or 60%).
If the student fails to make satisfactory monthly progress, an intervention plan will be put into place for the following month. If progress does not improve and become successful after no more than three intervention plans, the student may be withdrawn from the course and/or program.
We want to partner with you to ensure your student has a successful experience in our program.
Success is achieved when your student consistently meets four key participation requirements:
Active Engagement (Time & Effort): Dedicating the necessary time and energy to their studies.
Regular Contact (Attendance): Maintaining the required, consistent check-ins with their teacher.
Completed Assignments: Submitting all assigned coursework as expected.
Completed Assignments: Submitting all assigned coursework as expected.
This status is a serious indicator that your student is currently not meeting the necessary criteria for WLA, and their continued enrollment is at risk.
WLA is an Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) program, closely monitored by the state of Washington, with mandatory requirements for active participation.
Our Next Step: This status triggers a comprehensive review of your student's progress. Based on the severity of the concerns, we will take one of two actions:
Immediate Withdrawal: In certain cases, a student may be immediately withdrawn from the program.
Intervention Plan: Most often, we will work with you to develop a focused Intervention Plan. This plan provides a structured, supportive opportunity for your student to quickly demonstrate their commitment and ability to meet the program's expectations, helping them stay on track at WLA.
SEMESTER GRADING
(DISTRICT REPORT CARDS)
Formal report cards for WLA are based on the Monthly Progress Review (MPR) standards-based grading scale (*: NO DATA; 1: Emerging; 2: Approaching; 3: Meeting; 4: Exceeding) which is derived from check-ins, work samples, and Edgenuity data.
Upon the launch of WLA K-8, the school committed to a Standards-Based Grading model via Monthly Progress Reviews (MPR). This decision was based on the idea that simply thinking of student work as an “A” or an “F” doesn’t tell us much about student progress. In some cases, a student could turn in all the work, but not understand the concept and still have a “B”-- where another student could master the concept but turn in very little work and get a “D”.
Since the state reporting system requires traditional numeric entries, a translation system has been developed to ensure standards-based data aligns accurately with the state gradebook.
To facilitate this, a 20-point benchmark assignment is utilized in the online gradebook. The student’s score (1–4) is then converted* into a percentage that directly aligns with their demonstrated progress.
4: Exceeding Standard (90%–100%) → 18–20 pts
3: Meeting Standard (80%–89%) → 16–17 pts
2: Approaching Standard (65%–79%) → 13–15 pts
1: Emerging Proficiency (25%–64%) → 5–12 pts
This process translates detailed MPR feedback into the standardized format required by the state’s tracking system.
* NOTE: The data conversion process for grading and reporting focuses on the 'whole student' rather than just a progress bar. While student activity within Edgenuity is monitored, the pacing bar is not the primary focus for grading. Instead, the Monthly Progress Report (MPR) is used to determine if a student is making consistent, meaningful progress. Assignment and quiz scores are factored in heavily, as the actual grade serves as a key indicator of mastery. If a student is off-pace, the underlying reasons are reviewed to provide better support. Finally, work samples are used to verify that digital data aligns with the student’s real-world skill level, ensuring a fair and accurate representation of learning.
