Weekly & Monthly Check-in expectations

AN exciting announcement from WLA concerning monthly progress review meetings:

Hello Families of Washougal Learning Academy Students,

It is the goal of WLA to provide high-quality, individualized, and collaborative learning with students and families, and this way of providing our monthly review will help us to reach that goal.

What- Two tools, the Monthly Progress Review (MPR) standards sheet and the Pre-Meeting Checklist. The MPR sheet will help us to track student progress over time, giving you more and better information to help support students. The Pre-Meeting Checklist will help families to prepare for meetings so that they are productive, helpful, and student-focused.

Why- WLA recognizes that it can be difficult to keep track of learning progress at home, and that this new environment also creates lots of opportunities for learning paths outside of textbooks and worksheets. We want to honor the work, track the growth, and celebrate the accomplishments, all while identifying areas of opportunity. These tools, and a more structured, student-focused MPR meeting every month, will go a long way towards providing the best possible learning outcomes for your family.

When- This process will begin the first month. As a parent, you will want to review the Pre-Meeting Checklist to learn more about the focus of our meetings. It is a great way to discuss the learning with your student and set goals. Families are not expected to be proficient with both tools right away, nor do we expect students to be attempting to meet all standards at the same time. We will meet these goals gradually throughout the year, and add to this process over time. This is the start of a new process and it will improve over time, as teachers, families, and students get to practice using the new format.

Please watch the attached video prior to your monthly meeting, and review the Pre-Meeting Checklist, and your teacher will discuss this in greater detail when you meet. If you have any questions, you can me, Jason Foster @ jason.foster@washougalsd.org, or your teacher.

Remember that school is not the building, it is the learning— and great learning can happen everywhere!

WEEKLY CHECK INS

We are focusing on learning. Students need to be able to communicate with us, with parent guidance if needed, what the learning targets are and show or tell us how they reached the target.

In other words, if a student’s target (goal) was to ride a bike independently, without falling off, then they could tell us that they learned to balance on a bike while a parent held it and then they went outside and practiced until they were able to ride one block without falling.

The discussion will include celebration, struggle, and improvement.

    • Celebration is what went well or what they learned

    • Struggle is what didn’t go well or what mistakes they made

    • Improvement is what they would do differently next time to make it better
