Mayflies of Wisconsin
and other Midwest states

My research on mayflies focuses on the taxonomy, distributions, and habitat requirements of mayflies from Wisconsin, surrounding states, and Ontario. These are ecologically important insects that are aquatic as nymphs (larvae) and terrestrial as adults. Mayfly nymphs in general are sensitive to water quality, so their presence or absence can tell us much about environmental conditions. Even though Wisconsin has a long history of mayfly research, there remains much to learn about our mayfly fauna. My various research projects attempt to advance that understanding.

In addition to projects in Wisconsin, I have collected and studied mayflies in Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, and Ontario. These efforts are reflected in my publication record. Whenever possible, undergraduate students from the two campuses of University of Wisconsin - Whitewater participate in my research program. Such collaborations provide students with outstanding opportunities for learning and professional growth. Two of my past, undergraduate students have shared authorship on published papers.

I welcome any mayfly specimens that require identifications. Though my expertise is greatest with Midwest species, I have the necessary resources to identify mayflies from across the United States and Canada.
