My Philosophy in Teaching
In order to understand what makes a good teacher we need to consider how we learn best.
Consider a teacher that helped you to understand, learn or master something. It may have been at school, or when you were an undergraduate or postgraduate. Why was their teaching effective?
Some or all of the following were probably involved:
They clarified what you already knew
They simplified/explained in a different way
They were enthusiastic
They did not make you feel silly for not knowing
They used different ways of teaching.
Small groups -
You are introducing a group of trainees to a task-based activity, but the students are resistant to the activity because they do not feel comfortable with each other. How could a trainer use their authority to facilitate the group activity?
It is suggested that the trainer should retain all the authority in the session, and lead the activity. They could:
Use an icebreaker to help the group get to know each other
Establish ground rules (e.g. as a facilitator you won't allow one trainee to criticise another)
Initiate the activity and suggest discussion points
Encourage and praise participation
Assign specific roles, e.g. ask half the group to consider the activity from the perspective of one persona, and the other half of the group to take the opposing view
As the session progresses, the trainees become more confident and start to participate more in the discussion. How can you encourage the group to take ownership of the activity?
It is suggested that the trainer should transfer some of the authority to the group members, and take the role of facilitator rather than leader.
Lectures
Think of a good and bad lecture that you have attended. What were the positive aspects of the good lecture and the negative aspects of the bad lecture? What could the lecturer have done to improve the bad lecture?
Some points to consider:
were the lecturers organised?
were the lectures well structured and did they include an outline at the beginning and regular summary points?
did they include examples to illustrate theory?
how was the pace of delivery? Were you able to make notes and still pay attention?
did you feel stressed or overwhelmed in the lecture?
did the lecturers change their tone of voice during the lecture?
were the lecturers enthusiastic?
