As he examined the fallen guards, a new chill approached and assaulted
Akxo. First the tips of his fingers became frozen. It began moving up his
hands, into his arms.
Akxo struggled against the cold but it had begun moving into his mind, as
well, trying to persuade him to fall to the ground, to give up. But he
would not give up. He muttered a few words and holy flames burst around
him, easing the chill. Kraxul hastily built a fire and threw a shot of
whiskey at the freezing dwarf. Akxo took a healthy swig and laughed, his
arms almost entirely frozen now.
The other laugh carried through on the icy wind, echoing at the gate. Akxo
summoned what energy he had left and shouted into the darkness,
"YA CALL THIS COLD? "
Akxo closed his eyes after that burst and stared upwards, praying to Cliath
to protect the Mountain from this threat.
The laughter persisted and the shadow reappeared on the horizon. The blue
orb in its grasp began to glow, steadily gaining brightness. And then, just
like that, the figure disappeared and the cold receded. Feeling came back
into Akxos arms and he rose to his feet, thanking the King and attending
to the two icy guards.
The King and the Axebearer stood together, examining the damage, waiting for
Kroft to return from repairs in the center of Thaxanos.
"Who was tha Wizard tha attacked recently? Could it beh responsible? "
mused Akxo, glancing at the King.
"Alrekr," responded the King, "But this seems a different attack, he brought
an army last time. "
Akxo nodded, thinking. Perhaps it was Alrekr, back for revenge on the
dwarves. Back to give them a taste of the power he commanded. Perhaps it
was even worse. Was this Akxos first encounter with Malachive? Was it
Malachives pet wizard, Seanan? No one knew for sure. Akxo had the best
look at the figure, and he could make nothing out.
Akxo now knew that a connection had been formed with this being, whoever it
might have been. He had been specifically targeted and fought against it.
He could feel the power that had been inside of him and would be ready to
repel it again the next time it reared its dangerous head.
The shaking and crumbling had stopped and the cold had wafted away. Akxo,
Kraxul, and Kroft exchanged words, ideas, and instructions for keeping
watch. Akxo was also asked to pray to Cliath for guidance, and he surely
would. They all knew this was not the last time they would see this weapon,
a weapon that might be able to break the very Mountain itself.
Not if these dwarves have anything to say about it.
