Phenotyping

A very limited number of resistance genes are effective against the current population of oat rust fungi. This merits investment in identifying novel sources of crown and stem rust resistance, which can be incorporated into breeding materials to develop new rust-resistant oat cultivars. The phenotyping team will focus on evaluating oat germplasm to discover new rust resistance genes effective against highly virulent rust races that have recently developed worldwide.
