e Day Sock Derangement 2/14/20

There us a classic problem from probability and combinatorics called the “hat-check” problem. There are many ways to phrase it, but here’s a classic one:

"n friends leave their hats at the hat check. Unfortunately the hat check employee loses track of whose hat is whose. What is the probability that no one gets their own hat back?"

The answer is not hard to compute and involves "counting derangements." What happens as the number of people goes to infinity is truly intriguing! The probability goes to 1/e. In honor of e-day (2/7) and Valentine’s Day (2/14) we’d like to invite you to play the hat-check game with the AMS.

Halloween movie! 11/01/19

For Halloween 2019, we held a movie night in Vincent 301 to watch "Sneakers," a scary movie best described as a "crypto-thriller."

Binary Day: (Joint with SIAM) 10/10 (whow, that's 10 in binary!)

This is a new event for 2019 that we are jointly hosting with SIAM! We are celebrating patterns in math and binary numbers with a talk by Sam Hopkins and 0 and 1 shaped foods. Also come join us to play the combinatorial game of Nim!
