The Zhao group is part of IRG1, endotaxial 2D polytype heterostructures. Our research aims to create thin layers of vdW materials embedded within their chemically identical but structurally distinct polytype counterparts, enabling the stabilization of novel quantum phases in these vdW layers at elevated temperatures.

NSF NQVL @ Michigan - Quantum Photonic Integration and Deployment

The Zhao group investigates and quantifies the nonlinear optical properties of MBE-grown materials, such as AlN and Sc-doped AlN. Building on their strong optical nonlinearities, our goal is to integrate these materials into photonic structures to develop quantum systems capable of performing high-precision measurements.

NSF-AFRL-REFLEQTS - Floquet effects at ultra-low fields for steady state quantum devices

The Zhao group explores 2D magnetic materials and moiré superlattices in photonic cavities to study how cavity light can drive and control quantum phenomena. Our goal is to stabilize light-driven effects at low driven-fields and over long time, and eventually use these cavity-enabled phases to enable future quantum devices.

DOD MURI - Atomically-Precise Oxide Bicrystals with a Twist

The Zhao group uses optical techniques to study twisted 3D/3D bicrystals, focusing on how their electronic, magnetic, and optical properties are modified by the resulting superlattices. Our goal is to create and understand new phases of matter in 3D/3D bicrystals that cannot be realized in 2D/2D superlattices.
